SENIOR ALERT! Tip-Offs To Rip-Offs
It's a fact that scam artists prey on the elderly. Whether in person or on the phone, scam artists strike up a conversation and ingratiate themselves.
They then offer to do the homeowner a "favor" by offering a discounted repair. While these scammers operate year-round, they are particularly
active during the spring and fall when they can push weather-related repairs. Some of the most common scams are driveway resealing, roofing
repairs and chimney repairs. If you have an elderly parent, friend, or neighbor we suggest you print out the list below and get it posted next to
that person's phone. You could be saving them from an expensive scam.
Clues To A Less Than Reputable Contractor:
- Solicits business door-to-door
- Claims to have leftover building materials
- Offers discounts for referrals
- Works on a cash-only basis
- Asks for full payment up-front
- Suggests you get a loan from the contractor's lender
- Has no business address or listing in the phone book business section
- Informs you that your job will be a "demonstration"
- Pressures you for an immediate decision
- Offers an exceptionally long guarantee
- Doesn't offer to sign a written contract
Dishonest contractors work under the radar avoiding paperwork, licensing, permits...anything which offers a paper trail between
them and the shoddy work they perform. They entice homeowners with promises of discounts and warranties they never intend
on supporting.
